Position summary
Northeastern Public Health (NEPH) shares lands with many Indigenous peoples living both in urban centres and in distinct First Nations communities. Engagement and mutually beneficial relationships with our Indigenous partners are important to identify and address public health priorities as determined by our communities.
Under the direction of the Director of Strategic Supports, the Indigenous Liaison will assist with the development, implementation, and evaluation of the NEPH Reconciliation Framework, which will include a comprehensive Indigenous Engagement Strategy for the area. They will work with First Nations communities, rural/urban Indigenous community members and partners, health unit staff, senior management, and the Medical Officer of Health to foster meaningful relationships to support better health for Indigenous people.
The Liaison will also support NEPH in meeting the requirements outlined in the Ontario Public Health Foundational Standard on Health Equity, as well as implementing the Calls to Action relevant to public health listed in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada 2015. Furthermore, with their deep understanding of Indigenous culture, the Liaison will enhance cultural awareness of staff and ensure culturally appropriate public health initiatives.
Qualifications
- A Master’s in a relevant or related field, such as Indigenous studies, health policy, public health, etc., is preferred;
- Undergraduate degree in a relevant or related field such as Indigenous studies, health policy, public health, etc.;
- Five (5) years’ relevant experience working with Indigenous communities, health programming, or community development processes;
- Strong understanding of Indigenous issues and cultures, as well as local Indigenous community groups or agencies;
- Familiarity with the structure and history of Indigenous communities within Northeastern Ontario, with a focus on the Northeastern Public Health area;
- Knowledge of current and emerging public health priorities identified by Indigenous communities and organizations;
- Demonstrated skills related to facilitation, consensus-building, and consultation;
- Excellent oral and written communication skills;
- Ability to speak Cree, Oji-Cree and/or Ojibway is an asset;
- Previous lived experience is considered an asset;
- Willingness to work flexible hours and travel to meet program needs
- Satisfactory criminal background check;
- Required to comply with Immunization policies, including COVID-19 vaccination, unless a valid medical exemption is provided.
