Northeastern Public Health (NEPH) continues to respond to the ongoing opioid crisis across the region and reminds residents to remain vigilant following the RED Drug Alert issued for the NEPH area effective July 15, 2026.
“We are increasingly concerned by reports indicating that stronger and more dangerous substances are being found in unregulated drug products within our communities,” says Seamus Murphy, Deputy Chief of Standards and Community Services at the Cochrane District Paramedic Service. “This trend significantly increases the risk of overdose and other serious health consequences for individuals who use these substances.”
To support education, awareness, and harm reduction efforts, NEPH offers free monthly virtual training sessions on naloxone administration and proper needle handling and disposal. These sessions are open to community members, community partners, and local businesses throughout the NEPH region.
“This RED Drug Alert highlights the importance of continued awareness, prevention, and community collaboration,” says Krista Green, Program Manager at Northeastern Public Health. “Any illicit drug — regardless of how it is used — may contain toxic or fatal substances that can result in unintentional opioid poisonings. Staying informed, seeking help, and accessing available healthcare resources are critical steps in preventing harm.”
NEPH continues to encourage residents to carry naloxone, a life-saving medication that can temporarily reverse the effects of an opioid poisoning. Naloxone is easy to use and available free of charge at most pharmacies and all Northeastern Public Health offices.
NEPH also continues to share drug alerts, training opportunities, and harm reduction information through its website and social media channels. Key recommendations include:
- Never use substances alone. If possible, use substances with someone you trust or contact the National Overdose Response Service (NORS) before using substances at 1-888-688-6677.
- Carry naloxone and multiple doses whenever possible.
- Call 911 immediately if you suspect someone is experiencing an opioid poisoning.
